The Ministers of Public Enterprises and Finance today met the leadership of the Banking Association of South Africa (BASA), CEO’s of banks on the BASA Board and representatives of the insurance and asset management industry, about the operational performance of and financing requirements for State-Owned Companies (SOC’s).

The two Ministers provided banks with an update on the liquidity positions of the respective SOC’s in the portfolio of the Department of Public Enterprises.

The engagement was constructive with government re-affirming its commitment towards stablising governance and the operational performance of SOC’s, whilst the banks will continue to engage the department of public enterprises on the liquidity requirements of SOC’s in the short- to medium term.

Technical teams from government and banks will continue to work with BASA to develop the most appropriate mechanisms for the short- to medium term borrowing requirements of SOC’s.
