The 4th Annual Trek4Mandela 2015 Executive Climb in support of “Keeping the Girl Child in School” initiative will take place from 14 – 19 July with the trekkers summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro on Mandela Day – Saturday, 18 July 2015. This year’s expedition will comprise 27 CEO, a number of celebrities and two representatives from The Banking Association South Africa, Fikile Kuhlase and Muzi Mhlambi who will be led on the trek by Sibusiso Vilane (first black person in the world to conquer the 3 Poles challenge – South Pole, North Pole and Mount Everest twice) Richard Mabaso.
“This year the initiative aims to raise R40 million and collect over 3 million sanitary pads for distribution to 270 000 girl children throughout South Africa to ensure that the Girl Child does not miss a day of school.”
What is Trek4Mandela?
The Trek4Mandela Challenge was founded in 2012 Richard Mabaso of Imbumba Foundation and founder and visionary of Caring4Girls. The Caring4Girls initiative was established in 2012 when Richard Mabaso overheard a fearful conversation between his mom and niece on puberty. Caring4Girls is a menstrual hygiene programme that supports school girls with sanitary towels, and related puberty and adolescence awareness. His research showed that the majority of girls in Africa miss up to 50 days of school per annum owing to menstrual challenges. This puts African girls at a severe disadvantage missing 300 days (almost a whole year) of school over a 6 year period. The Trek4Mandela Challenge and Caring4Girls initiative is an integral part of the StarSaver™ (formerly Teach Children to Save South Africa™) programme.
Who Are the Stakeholders?
StarSaver™ is an initiative of The Banking Association South Africa that allows for a holistic approach to address the social ills that impact on the financial well-being and future of South Africa’s youth.
The Banking Association South Africa, through StarSaver™, has been part of the Caring4Girls initiative since inception and continues to support and participate in the programme.
